Cork in Colour tiles is a popular alternative to hard flooring options. The minute you first step onto a cork laid floor, you will instantly notice the difference. After the tiles are laid it may then require a couple of maintenance coats and just like that your floor will be finished in no time.

Cork in Colour is a winning flooring option, which combines:

  • Personal style
  • Texture
  • Warmth
  • And finally comfort

With the above factors in mind it is no wonder that it becomes a natural choice for any home. At Bay Flooring Sanding we use 100{2fdd538b933bd6dddf09b587f9f0306f95e087b88ea883e3e0b525d337367f2c} cork, as opposed to engineered laminate flooring. This means it will last a lot longer and can be used in all areas of the house, even in the bathroom. Whether you decide to go for natural tones or much more bold colours, you will notice the benefits of cork instantaneously.

One thing to bear in mind when thinking about putting down a cork floor is that if there is any damage to the cork it is hard to fix. Cork will last a very long time, however it needs to be looked after properly. Cork can bounce back from small nicks but do avoid dragging sharp or heavy objects across a cork floor.

Concrete Grinding & Polishing

There are two different grinding methods to achieve a “Polished Concrete Floor”. These terms are called “Grind and Seal” and “Grind and Polish“.

“Grind and Seal” method

  • Very common and widely used.
  • Grind and Seal is when the concrete surface is ground back to achieve the desired stone exposure level.
  • After the grinding process has been completed the floor is sealed with a high build clear sealer coating.
  • These clear sealer coatings typically are made up of Acrylic’s, Urethanes or Epoxies.
  • This method is generally cost effective.
  • Things to consider, this system is more prone to scratching and damage caused by the hard concrete surface having no flexibility under pressure.

The “Grind and Polish” method

  • This is when the concrete is ground back to the desired stone exposure level
  • The result is a much harder concrete surface.
  • The concrete is then honed (Polished) to a desired sheen or gloss level. A penetrating sealer is usually applied to protect the surface from stains.
  • The result is a much harder, near scratch resistant surface with great light reflective characters.
  • Things to consider, it is more labour intensive and costs more to produce however has much less ongoing maintenance costs.

One of the key roles Bay Floor Sanding performs in regards to concrete grinding and polishing is preparing concrete under uplifted carpet or vinyl. If you require more than this service then just consult with Barry on your specific needs and he will do his utmost best to help you achieve your vision.

On Completion Of Sanding And Coating of Your Floors. Care and maintenance

  • Avoid walking on the floor for at least 24 hours.
  • It takes 5- 7 days for the polyurethane to fully harden. At least 72 hours after the final coat is applied you can put your furniture back in the rooms. Avoid dragging furniture, lift and place where possible otherwise the polyurethane will be damaged. If you drag your furniture across the floor you will risk scratching or gouging your floor.
  • While the polyurethane is curing, refrain from spraying any aerosols i.e. fly spray or air freshener etc. as this can cause a reaction if it were to land on the polyurethane.
  • Never wear stilettos on timber floors as the heel point damages the floor and leaves unsightly indentation
  • To assist with minimizing scratching of your newly sanded and coated floor, place or glue small pieces of cut carpet or protective furniture pads to the feet of all furniture and heavy objects.
  • Never allow your newly coated polyurethane floor to become flooded in the first month of its life, as the polyurethane needs to fully cure. Polyurethane will finish curing 2-3 weeks after it’s applied.
  • To keep your floor looking its best, try to dust and mop at least once a week. Dust more frequently as well
  • Spills and tracked in dirt can be cleaned by lightly damp mopping the floor regularly with of methylated spirits and warm water. Waxes, oil soaps, liquid ammonia, vinegar or silicon cleaners should not be used on the floor.

Many years of hard use may require the floor to be reglazed to restore the finish. A reglaze can be done with a minimum of inconvenience and Barry and the team at Bay Floor Sanding will be happy to come and do this for you. The floor should be coated when it shows signs of wear; do not wait until it has worn to the bare board.
